A comparative study of the ovaries in some Brazilian bees (Hymenoptera; Apoidea) Pap. Avulsos de Zool. (São Paulo)
Martins,Gustavo Ferreira; Serrão,José Eduardo.
The present paper concerns the morphological features of ovaries in 33 species of bees with different social behavior patterns. The ovaries of bees were examined under light microscope. They are polytrophic-meroistic ovaries formed for an anterior germarium and a basal vitellarium. The germarium houses the germ cells and in the vitellarium there are follicles arranged linearly. In general the follicle is constituted by a nutritive chamber (a cluster of nurse cells) and an oocyte chamber, both covered by a single epithelial layer of follicular cells. The number of ovarioles per ovary and the number of mature oocyte per ovary were analyzed. Measurements of ovariole length, oocyte size, oocyte width, follicular epithelial height and the intertegular distance...

First report and morphological redescription of Teleonemia morio (Stål) (Hemiptera, Tingidae) in Annona squamosa L. (Annonaceae) in Brazil Rev. Bras. entomol.
Broglio,Sônia M. F.; Dias-Pini,Nivia da S.; Costa,Luiz A. A.; Lemos,Eurico E. P..
First report and morphological redescription of Teleonemia morio (Stål) (Hemiptera, Tingidae) in Annona squamosa L. (Annonaceae) in Brazil. This is the first report of a severe attack of Teleonemia morio (Stål, 1855) (Hemiptera, Heteroptera, Tingidae) on Annona squamosa L. (custard apple), causing up to 80% of losses of infested trees. In order to facilitate the identification of this insect pest, the adult female of T. morio is redescribed based on specimens collected in Palmeira dos Índios, Alagoas, Brazil.

Morphology of immature stages and mating behavior in Liogenys fusca (Blanchard) (Coleoptera, Melolonthidae, Melolonthinae) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Rodrigues,Sérgio Roberto; Morón,Miguel Angel; Gomes,Elias Soares; Bento,José Maurício Simões.
ABSTRACT Liogenys fusca is a rizophagous insect pest in various crops of economic importance in Brazil. Here we investigated the morphology of immature stages and mating behavior of this species. The redescription of the 3rd instar larvae of L. fusca in this work allows identification and registration of occurrence independently of adults, which occur sporadically in a certain period of the year. Male and female of L. fusca remained confined in the soil during the day and exited between 19:00 and 23:30 h. The copulations occurred between 19:30 and 21:00 h, and were characterized by a typical behavioral sequence. Copulation durations in L. fusca lasted on average 512.23 s. Adults were observed feeding before the copulations on leaves and inflorescences of...

Ventilatory structures in Cryphocricos barozzii Signoret (Heteroptera, Naucoroidea) BJB
LOPEZ-RUF,M. L.; PELLERANO,G. N.; BACHMANN,A. O..
Plastron and spiracular features strongly resemble those of Aphelocheirus aestivalis (Fab.), described by Messner et al. (1981). Plastronal foliose hairs, somewhat irregular shaped are regularly distributed in the plastron. Very numerous tiny openigs on sternites an tergites connect platronal air with a subcuticular air film limited internally apparently by a membrane. Aplicated, radial, structure at the proximal end of the tracheae, almost occluding the extremely fine spiracular openings, appear with lesser variations in both species, suggesting close relationships than accepted until now.
